Rather than go it alone, with the help of this movement, adults who had never learned to read were suddenly coming out and joining like-minded people in the hope of getting help to overcome this somewhat overwhelming life obstacle. It seemed that people were usually ashamed of the fact that they were unable to read and write, so would hide the fact and thus not be able to get the help they need.
